There’s something about taking a kid fishing that makes any fishing trip a success. It doesn’t have to be anything special, just a pole, some bait and the hope of seeing the cork go under or feel a fish grab the lure.
That’s one reason the annual Sept. 13 D.A.R.E. Youth Fishing Tournament sponsored by the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office is a big deal. Fishing begins at 7 a.m. and goes until 11 a.m. and fisherboys and fishergirls can fish any public or private waters within Ouachita Parish and do not need to report to the tournament headquarters before fishing. Bank, pier and private pond fishing are allowed. The contest is open to children 2-12 years old from Ouachita and neighboring parishes.
All participants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Adults may only cast or assist in landing the fish for participants ages 2-6. For those who need supplies, Armstrong Cricket Farm will provide fishing poles and bait at the OPSO rifle range, the tournament headquarters.
If it swims and has fins, you can weigh it in! Awards will be given for all species Any species for the biggest fish in each age category — each participant may only weigh one fish, dead or alive. The awards ceremony begins at 12:30 p.m. The sheriff’s office will provide free food, youth activities and door prizes between 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Participants do not have to catch a fish to be entered into the door prize drawings, but must check in at the tournament headquarters and be present to collect the prize. No alcoholic beverages will be permitted.
