Hunt like a Hero

Saturday, I had a great time at Wild Wings in Downsville visiting with four of the United States Army’s finest,  SFC Phillip Whitty, SGT Steve Keller, SPC Daniel Cothren, and SPC Red Mauck. They all arrived at the Lodge Friday and did a little trap shooting with Louisiana Hunters for Heroes President Donnie Vocker, his son Tray and all the other volunteers.

Then the fun continued for the visiting heroes as they went for dinner at Sevins Restaurant in Farmerville, where Thomas graciously donated dinner and hosted the event. Saturday morning the group met duck hunt host Danny Batten and went on a duck hunt near Mer Rouge.

“We had a great hunt, good breakfast in the blind cooked by Danny’s friend Mike,” said Donnie. “We killed some ducks and had a great time! Danny Batten is a about one of the greatest guys I’ve met in a long time. I don’t believe I could tell him thank you enough for the things he did for the Vets.”

Donnie also thanked Randy and Gayle Smith at Wild Wings Lodge for showing everyone some great hospitality at the lodge, including some shooting tips that helped a lot. Others who donated to the cause were Cabela’s, Coca-Cola, Eric and Nickie Clark, Jerry Rugg, House of Raeford, Podnah’s Barbeque, and the group’s newest helper and cook Duane Boyte. The event was also covered by Nick Lawton of KTVE, Robert Lemoine of the Banner and yours truly!  Senator Mike Walsworth also came out for the festivities and also Hayden Haynes of Senator Vitter’s office.  The Fort Polk WTU presented LHH an appreciation certificate for their work. If you want to know more about LHH, contact them at 318-278-2909 or email at lahuntersforheroes@gmail.com. The mailing address is 347 Moseley’s Bluff Rd, Downsville, LA 71234. They are always in need of donations and sponsors, so if you believe in what they are doing, help them out! Any checks should be made to North American Hunters for Heroes. All money is used in the state in which it is donated.

Tomorrow we will have photos of the happy hunters with their harvest!
