The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will host National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHFD) events tomorrow — Saturday, Sept. 22 — in four locations throughout the state, including West Monroe. If you’ve got young folks in your family this is a great way to spend part of a Saturday learning about and celebrating the outdoors. The West Monroe event details are listed below:
Ouachita Parish Rifle Range
357 Sheriff Fewell Road
West Monroe, La * 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
(318) 343-4044 for more information
The event is free and features exhibits on LDWF management programs, Ducks Unlimited, Safari Club, Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana and supporting businesses from the local communities and much more. Attendees will have a chance to try their skills at shooting, fishing and boating, as well as learn about wildlife with live animals.
In case you are worried about the weather this weekend, I’d suggest getting there early. There is a growing chance of rain showers beginning in the early afternoon, but we’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the events. Hats off to the LDWF, Sheriff’s Department personnel and other countless volunteers who make this happen. It’s a great event.
Here’s a quick look at the weather forecast for WM Saturday, Don’t let that scare you away!
This event has a great history in Louisiana. The event’s first big celebration for the public was held in Monroe more than 40 years ago. It was moved to West Monroe a few years ago because of CenturyTel construction blocking access to the LDWF facilities off Hwy. 165. The Sheriff’s Range provides an excellent venue, though, and offers excellent facilities. Everything is in easy walking distance and very well kept. Today, more than 10,000 people statewide attend the celebrations, making it the biggest public event held by the department.
