It was a big weekend for crappie, bass….and deer and ducks? Yep, deer and ducks, too. While most area sportsmen were out on the lakes (looking first for a parking place at a boat ramp, then for fish), Lake D’Arbonne Country was also celebrating deer and ducks and the outdoors in general.

First, the fish are biting. Bass are spawning. Crappie are staging for the spawn and moving into easier-to-be-caught places. And the two biggest deer events of the year were held on the same weekend. Simmons’ Sporting Goods Big Buck contest winners were celebrated Saturday in Bastrop. The the Union Parish Big Buck banquet honoring the biggest deer harvested here was held in Farmerville. A highlight of that event was honoring this year’s Outdoor Legends of the Parish. You can find out more photos and information on the Gazette’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/thefgazette/
One even had a duck sidebar — the Louisiana State Cut-down Duck Calling contest that was part of the Big Buck Day at Simmons’.
