Duck, duck… going, going

IMG_0571Duck season comes to an end after a 60-day run Sunday. If you are a hunter, better get out there and get in your last shots in! If you want to keep up with the latest on ducks in our area, you can go to Simmon’s Sporting Goods Duck Report and check it out. You can do that by going to their website and clicking on “Duck Report“. The grand prize is a $100 gift certificate to the store and anybody is eligible to enter. What are you waiting for?

Duck season started out in great fashion this year. A pre-season cold front brought in lots of birds and they were fairly concentrated because of the lack of water. Hunting success was good. As the season waned, the last few weeks have been okay, but pretty tough. There are a lot of teal back in the area and they offer some great shooting. The “big ducks” are working later in the morning. There were no real arctic blasts up north of us that lasted long enough to really send the birds pouring into the area when we had plenty of water. The final weekend is shaping up as a good one weather wise. There’s a lot of water in low spots in the woods and some backwater along the Ouachita River and Bayou D’Arbonne, so there are places to go even if you don’t have a big duck lease in a rice field.

It’s been a good season overall, though. Remember to check dates and regulations in areas you hunt. There is also a special youth hunt at the end of the season in the East Zone. Check it out if you have a young hunter.
