Almost turkey time

Screen Shot 2015-07-31 at 5.56.33 PMNo, not turkey season.  It is time for the 19th annual Hunting Heritage Banquet put on by the Union Long Spurs Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. It will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, August 15, at 6 p.m. at the Willie Davis Jr. Recreation Center in Farmerville.

The Long Spurs are a very active group of sportsmen who promote their sport for others, not just take part in it personally. Their works are too numerous to mention here, but trust me, they do everything from hunter education to putting on youth hunts to preparing habitat for turkeys on lands they don’t even hunt on. And raising money to do it!

If you want to find out more about this group, here’s a link to an article I did this spring in the Louisiana Sportsman magazine about them. Click and read. You’ll be glad you did.

Tickets are $50 a person, which includes a $35 NWTF membership and $15 for supper. You can buy a whole table of your own for eight people for $400 and pick up a sponsorship for $275. Youth tickets for “jakes” are avaiable for $15 for youth under 15. For more information, contact Jed Rhodes at 318-355-9065 or Peyton McKinnie at tigerbendhuntingclub@yahoo.com
