Big deer, BASS update

Here’s  a look at the three top deer in the Inaugural Union Parish Big Buck contest. Winners were recognized at the Big Buck Sportsman’s Expo banquet Thursday night in Farmerville. Gold sponsors for the event were Marion State Bank, Edward Jones Investments, Union Parish Farm Bureau Insurance, Buck Report of Union Parish and Farmerville Fire Department. The winning deer were all taken in Union Parish and hunters had purchased a ticket to take part in the contest BEFORE they went to the woods:

The winner: Hunter Fowlkes 10 point champion!

We can tell for sure that's a nice bass coming into the boat for Monroe's Brett Preuett on Day 1. Brett, that is you under there, isn't it? It's only 10 degrees over there...

Friday was the first day of actual competition for the BASS Classic in Greenville, South Carolina. The start of the world championship was delayed for almost two hours because of brutal weather that made even getting to the ramp difficult. Brett caught one fish that weighed 3-0 even. It wasn’t what he hoped for, but he’s still shooting to make the top 25 so he can fish Sunday in the finals! Here’s our exclusive report from Brett:

“Today was very tough. Like I said before, I wasn’t getting a lot of bites in practice, but they were some good ones. They postponed  takeoff until 9 a.m. so that hurt me with not getting many bites. Those extra two hours would have really helped. I had three bites today and lost two very good fish. The one I landed was three pounds even. However, the experience of going onto the stage of the BASSMaster Classic was priceless. I’m praying that I can get 5 good bites tomorrow and I think I can make it to fishing on Sunday.”

Hope so, Brett. Hope so!

Now this is cold: One reason the launch was delayed this morning was the number of boats that were FROZEN to their trailers.  Wow. Anglers had to use their 200-horse+ outboards to rock and roll and finally break free. There was no jumping in the water to help out reported… Anglers had to spray their rods and reels and trolling motor with aerosal freeze protection to keep them from icing up all day long.

This is even colder: The officials at BASS are under some “fire” for moving the Classic to such a frigid time of year. Everyone thought nothing could be worse than last year’s event in Oklahoma, but S.C. has come out on top…or bottom…as far as weather. But they’ve kept their sense of humor for sure. What did BASS gurus do to warm up the fishermen while they waited two hours for safer temperatures? They blared music from the British American rock group, “Foreigner” over the loudspeaker. The selection of choice, “COLD AS ICE“….Now that was just plain cold… (Thanks to BASS for the photos from the Classic!)
