This weekend will be a big weekend for eight disabled veterans from Fort Polk and four other Vietnam veterans from our area. They will be going after doves in Morehouse Parish as part of the Louisiana Hunters for Heroes annual outdoor activities.
“We should have a great trip,” said HFH leader Donnie Vocker. “We’ve got sunflower fields up in the Bastrop area planted and maintained by Venoy Kinnaird and Chris Christmas and they are donating the hunts. The vets will arrive for the all-expenses paid trip Friday and stay at cabins in Chemin-A-Haut State Park courtesy of the State Parks. After breakfast at the farm, there will be a morning dove hunt followed by a hamburger lunch. All the activities except for the hunt itself are open to the public and visitors are encouraged to come say “thank you” to the veterans. An afternoon hunt will follow and the weekend will end with a fish fry for everyone and another night at the Park.
The address for the activities is 16388 Old Bonita Road north of Bastrop.
“We want to thank everyone for their support,” Vocker added. “Without our sponsors and volunteers, we couldn’t make this happen. And the guys really appreciate it. It means a lot.”
