There’s no way to even come close in this small space to tell the whirlwind story of what is going on around Duck Commander Phil Robertson and the controversy stirred by remarks conveying his personal Christian beliefs about marriage, sexual behavior and what the Bible clearly states about those. Believe me, I don’t intend to try and do that. This is mostly an entertainment and information website, not a political one.
However, Duck Dynasty and the Robertson family have become a huge part of who we are in north Louisiana and it’s been good. Very good. If somebody, at this point, is surprised to find that they are Christians and believe the Bible, then they need to go back to what they were doing before all this started.
Here’s my take: Whether I agree with the way he said everything or not, that is not the issue. It’s his right to say it that I defend. And today, like it or not, if you want to make a point, you have to often use pretty strong language. Phil Robertson’s biggest mistake in dealing with all the new-found national fame is simply that he is too honest. And if being too honest is a mistake, then God help us all. That ability to openly share his life and tell people what he thinks is a breath of fresh air in our country today. Twelve million people a week tune in because of that.
If you are a fan, the Robertson Family needs your prayers and support. If you aren’t, then I recommend that you turn your attention to something you do like. As my mom used to say, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me“. Some folks with only an eggshell between them and being offended need to learn that lesson. Hey, Jack, this is still America (I think). And free speech, whether you agree with what someone is saying or not, is a right and a privilege. The weird side of the world sure takes advantage of that right. This issue won’t go away soon, but we will not debate it here.
Frankly, it doesn’t sound like there is much hope that the family and A&E will maintain a long-term relationship unless A&E backs down. In the meantime, the Robertson family has issued a statement about the situation following A&E’s hasty decision to suspend Phil Robertson from the show because of comments he made:
“We want to thank all of you for your prayers and support. The family has spent much time in prayer since learning of A&E’s decision. We want you to know that first and foremost we are a family rooted in our faith in God and our belief that the Bible is His word. While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Phil would never incite or encourage hate.We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty.
Again, thank you for your continued support of our family.”
