Heroes are hard to come by.
When it comes to veterans of our military who put their lives on the line and provide life-changing sacrifices protecting our freedoms, the label doesn’t seem adequate for their service. I’m afraid not enough people appreciate that today.
That’s why I am so impressed with the actions of a group of men and women in our area, working as part of a greater organization nationally, that is honoring some of our hero veterans. Donnie Vocker of Downsville is one of the agents for Louisiana Hunters for Heroes, a chapter of North American Hunters for Heroes. He has been working diligently to set up quality deer hunts for five Louisiana veterans next month to be hosted here in Union Parish on Saturday, Nov. 9.
The five veterans are Deron Santiny and Shane Girard from the Lafayette area, Mike Records from Houston, and Mike Thomas and William Doyle from West Monroe. They will be hunting on three clubs in the Downsville area. The hunt donors are Pee Wee and Billy Jean Kennedy, Buck and Joy Fellows, Casey Albritton, Eric Clark and Vocker.
The group will go to the rifle range in West Monroe on Friday afternoon when they arrive in town. Saturday they will meet at their designated hunting spots off Hwy 15 and go to their respective stands. Everybody will meet back around 10:00 or so and have lunch around noon. before they will head back to the stands for the evening hunt. After the hunt they will have a barbeque for the vets and their family’s and sit around the campfire.
Vocker and his group have gotten a lot of help to make this possible. The Hilton Garden Inn in West Monroe donated the rooms for both nights. Catfish Charlies and Blue Star Moms are hosting dinner on Friday. Bethel Baptist will serve lunch on Saturday and Northhills Church will do dinner on Saturday. They have also been raffling off guns donated by Wilderness Acres Grocery to help with expenses.
“This is first hunt so I’m sure there will be some things I’ll have to improve on but we will give it our best shot,” Vocker said. “We have more hunts lined up but need more connections to Disabled Veterans and I would appreciate any help with that people could give me.”
