There are large numbers of hunting and fishing clubs, especially in states like Louisiana where the outdoors is such a big part of our life. But you’ll be hard pressed to find a group that not only loves it’s sport, but takes time to give back and get young people involved as the Union Long Spurs.
The group is made up of turkey hunters and their families here in Union Parish and they are affiliated with the National Wild Turkey Federation.
This past month, the group took time to honor three members who passed on this year — Todd Gilbert, Dixie Rhodes and Danny Tucker. Families of these honored members received custom turkey calls with the image of the members, created by artist Eric Rice. Local “Swamp People” legends Jeromy Pruitt and David LaDart were also special guests at the banquet.
They also made sure that young people were included. The group gave a $750 scholarship to Luke Albritton, a graduate of OCS. He plans on attending Louisiana Tech. The group also sponsored giving away two lifetime hunting licenses to two lucky young hunters. The group also sponsors three youth turkey hunts each season. Good job!
And among all their other activities, I bet they’ll still find a bit of time to go turkey hunting. Learn more about the group, or keep up with their activities, on Facebook:
