Homecoming for Willie

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERABack on April 22, 1972, who would have dreamed….  but 40 something years later, here we stand out beside Hwy. 167 coming into Bernice, Louisiana, snapping pictures, getting autographs and admiring the new gateway sign to the city, “Bernice: Birthplace of Duck Dynasty Star Willie Roberson“.

Yep. Willie, the third son of Duck Commander and Commandress Phil and Marsha Kay Robertson, was born on April 22, 1972, in the Tri-Ward General Hospital in Bernice. The Duck Dynasty star and leader of the Duck Commander business came back to Bernice, Americana headband, plaid shirt, boots and all, Friday to help the town celebrate. And he brought the key person involved in that birth, his mom Ms. Kay, with him.

It was a great morning for Bernice. Beauty queens, politicians, a three-car police escort and a Town Hall packed with fans from six weeks old to well, let’s just say 80ish. I mean, heck, how’d they miss filming this for a Duck Dynasty episode? It’s not too late to re-enact the event, that’s for sure! And all the while, the Robertson’s patiently signed autographs and posed for pictures, smiled and shook hands. They even made a trip to the local hospital to revisit the exact site of Willie’s birth and visit with a few of the sick folks. Back in the day, the Robertson’s were living in Junction City, just north of Bernice. The nearest hospital was in Bernice and that’s where Ms. Kay came to deliver Willie. The rest is history. Willie and his mom even visited the room where he was born this morning.

“This is awesome,” Willie said. “I’m proud to be here today and I appreciate this.”

We do, too, Willie. We do to.

“It’s good to get back to where it all started, to see where our family came from,” he added. He also pointed out that they saw a small trailer park where they lived when Willie was first born.

NOTE: Special thanks to the Town of Bernice (Mayor Bill Mitcham) and the Union Parish Tourism Commission (Minor Patton) with coordination from Stephanie Walker, area resident and Duck Commander employee, for putting this together.

logo_whiteI think this is a good spot to share a few of Willie’s best quotes from the show:

“Redneck law: Must have a gun. Must shoot it regularly.”

“Parenting is a constant struggle between making your kids life better and ruining your own.”

“I’m as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs! ”

“A Camouflaged Limo is like a bug light for Rednecks!”

“Redneckcolepsy, It’s like narcolepsy except it’s only when you fall asleep at work.”

“Remember that Christmas when we were gonna eat and then we stopped cooking to look at Christmas albums.”

“Every hero has a kryptonite or an uncle Si”

“I’ll show them it is all Jase’s fault…. I just gotta figure out how…”

ULM update: After being in second place after day one, ULM’s Nick LaDart and Brian Eaton caught only one fish Friday and slipped to 27th in the BASS College National Championship. ULM’s Blake Derron and Brett Preuett are in 22nd place in the event going into Saturday’s finals.
