Big bass; boat races and more !

Spring fishing is behind us, but there’s a big summer ahead. Get out your calendar and save some dates. One of the most anticipated big events of the year on big Lake D’Arbonne is the big MAJESTIC Big Bass Classic. It’s big. Did I mention big? The big event is schecduled to begin June 8 and end June 9 and spans 26 hours of fishing. Dale and Gayle Taylor of Downsville do a fantastic job of promoting bass fishing in our area and work with the folks at Ludwig Marine to make this big event happen. The annual event can net more than $21,000 for the lucky (or good) winners. Hey, that’s big. Brochures and entry forms are available at all area tackle stores and at the Tan Depot in Farmerville.

The “MAJESTIC” is an annual event that brings fishermen from all over north Louisiana, east Texas, south Arkansas and even Mississippi to the lake in search of the big bass that live there.  For more information contact Dale or Gale Taylor at 318-235-1039 or 318-368-0666. There are hourly big bass payouts, a heavy stringer division, a ladies division and two kids divisions. Weigh-in headquarters will be at Ludwig Brothers Marine on Highway 33 south. Hourly updates will be broadcast over the radio on KJLO 104.1 FM. “MAJESTIC” T-Shirts are now on sale at The Tan Depot, 303 Smith St., Farmerville, for $10 with all proceeds going to a very worthy cause — helping Jerry Morris to support his mission trips to Tajikistan.big bass

Last year, Chris Gates, from Downsville, walked away the big winner by bringing a 6.46 pound bass to the scales that took the Big Bass category of the event. Gates pocketed a total of $3,330 by winning the 10 p.m. to noon pay period, the overall Big Bass award and the Big Bass fruit jar. Mike Brister of Ruston weighed-in five fish during the event that were 3.26, 2.71, 4.67, 4.39 and 4.60 for a total of 19.63 pounds to win the Heavy Stringer category. For his efforts Brister earned a total of $3,230.

Ludwig Brothers Marine is also helping put on the DSRA (Deep South Racing Association) drag boat races on D’Arbonne June 22-23. Put that on your calendar.  This “Battle on the Bone” will feature  between 40 and 50 boats racing for a total purse of about $8000. There are several classes of boats in which races will be conducted from the bass boat category all the way up to the high performance rigs that will reach speeds of over 100 mph in the quarter mile course. The races course will be along old Highway 33 in front of Folly Beach so spectators will have a good view of the races. There will be several area boats in the races including Matt Ludwig’s bright red Allison, Terry Morris’ canary yellow Triad and Jeff Naul will be piloting his white Quarter Shot.

Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge and the Friends of Felsenthal will conduct their 25th annual Youth Fishing Derby on June 8. The derby is conjunction with the state of Arkansas’ free fishing weekend. Eligible youth participants must be ages 5 to 15 and must be accompanied by an adult. The derby will be held at the Locust Ridge Pond off Highway 82 West, look for the signs and banners. On-site registration will begin no earlier than 6:30 a.m. and fishing will begin at 7 a.m. The derby will conclude at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a prize ceremony. For more information contact Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge, 870-364-1170.
