Some younger folks may have never seen slow-talking Junior Samples on Hee-Haw on Saturday night. He’s always been one of my favorites. His dry wit and humor kept America chuckling for hours…and for years. Most folks don’t know, though, that Junior Samples got his start after telling a whopper of a fish story! Hey, I like a big guy who can tell fish stories!
The story goes that Samples spread the word that he had caught the world record bass and although the details were sketchy, he ended up on a game and fish radio talk show and a star was born. Samples did seem to remember that he weighed the fish, but couldn’t remember where. But he did remember he caught it on his Zeb-i-co 33 and a white bellied spring lizard. Thanks to today’s wonderful world of technology, we can take you back and let you hear that old radio broadcast, which later turned into a popular 45 (that was a record — an old time CD for you young folks). Enjoy.
