My wife loves staying in those old Bed & Breakfast places. I like the breakfast part, but all that antique furniture and ghostly looking mirrors and stuff kind of freak me out. Besides, that furniture…well, folks used to be a lot smaller in “those” days.
Peyton Spear introduced me to a new kind of bed and breakfast recently. It’s a Bream Bed & Breakfast.
Peyton has built two big B B & B’s out from his fishing pier the past few years. The ideal time is during a drawdown like this year. He took treated 1 X 4 boards and made a box, then staked it into the lake bottom. He filled up the “box” with about two inches of pea gravel and put out the “Vacancy” sign. They are usually inhabited by bluegill on a regular basis in the spring and summer. His wife Patty keeps the action going in the bream beds by throwing in a little corn or fish food every once in a while. Then you just surprise the big bream with a real treat — crickets au ju served on a hook — and you’ve got a mess of tasty fish to fry for supper. Pretty cool, huh?
Peyton has started somewhat of a trend around the lake with his fishing buddies. They are all doing it. Lake D’Arbonne is already a tourist destination for fishermen. Now the fish are getting a little bit of the fancy treatment for themselves.
Fantastic! just what we need for April. Stell
