Happy, Happy, Happy

There are very few things on television that compete with my passion for college football this time of year, but there’s one thing that will. Tonight the second season of Duck Dynasty begins at 9 p.m. on the A&E network. The Beards Are Back.  And I’m happy, happy, happy.

Here’s the A&E promo for the new season:

“This newly minted multimillionaire family is kept in line by business-savvy Willie, who runs Duck Commander with the help of his brother Jase, their respective wives Korie and Missy, patriarch and founder of the company, Phil, and uncle Si. Together they run a booming business that employs half their neighborhood, but at the end of the day, you can find the whole family around matriarch Miss Kay’s dinner table. Each episode brings a new set of challenges, met with a special brand of Southern know-how and a down-home sense of humor. This season on Duck Dynasty: Sadie attempts to get her driver’s license; John Luke starts dating, but Phil won’t let the teenage lovebirds out of his sight; Si gets fed-up with the duck call business and quits; the whole family pulls together and enters the local tractor race competition with a supped’ up racing machine; Kay asks Phil to build a playhouse for their granddaughters but he “looses” the directions; Willie takes a by-any-means-necessary approach to losing weight for his high school reunion; and Si is conned into a pricey purchase at the used car lot. It’s all hands on deck for the Duckmen when an old high school nemesis challenges them to a good old fashion race… at the local lawn mower competition. But Willie and the guys soon find out that this competitive and ridiculous underground sport is nothing short of high octane.”

I gotta tell you. I appreciate the Robertsons and I’m proud they are part of the culture of our area. It’s amazing to have a family like that right here in our part of the country that has achieved the kind of success, fortune and fame they have.  And their shows, while they do have their moments hamming it up for the camera, are not embarrassing like some of the reality shows that have poorly tried to portray life in our state. The episodes of Phil and family are more of an old school approach to a  running-barefoot-in-the backyard way of life like it used to be for kids — only the adults here still do it, too. So what’s wrong with that?  As I said, I love it.

I’m not really a betting man, but I bet the only “boom” this season for “Duck Dynasty” isn’t a shotgun being shot. I bet its the top of the chart being blown off the A&E TV ratings.

Duck Dynasty quote of the day
“Uptown living? You’ve got to call 911. Where I am, I am 911.”   — Phil
