ULM boys making a splash

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga — Eastern Washington University’s Nick Barr and Jerred Walker put together an astonishing five-fish limit weighing 19 pounds, four ounces to grab the lead in the Carhartt Bassmaster College National Championship. Not only was it a great catch, the two Washington fishermen are geographically the farthest team from this Georgia lake! Not … Continue reading

Ten,000,000 ?

Earlier this year, the Season 3 finale of “Duck Dynasty” made it cable TV’s No. 1 non-fiction series and the most-watched series on A&E in all key demographics with a record-breaking 9.6 million total viewers for a single episode. And in just a few days, they’ll be BACK for Season 4, Jack! I hope the … Continue reading

Chasing Maine Crawdads

I’ve always heard that Maine had some big crawfish, so this past week my wife and I went to check it out. Sure enough, they do!  And we had a blast going on a lobster boat to catch some, eat them and enjoy a part of the country we’ve never been to before. Folks up … Continue reading

Honoring the Melon!

Congratulations to the Farmerville Jaycees and all their sponsors and supporters who helped put on a fantastic 50th Anniversary Watermelon Festival this past weekend.  Threatening weather didn’t dampen the spirits of those in attendance and the parade, vendors, watermelons, etc. were super. Our family got to enjoy the event and I hope yours did to!

This Lucky 13 not a topwater

Most veteran bass fishermen are familiar with the “Lucky 13” lure.  But the guys that fished with that wooden plug probably have some pretty strong language to describe the one in this story. Pro bass fisherman Casey Martin recently won the 2013 Walmart FLW Tour season with a four-day catch of 103 pounds, 3 ounces … Continue reading

A living Bible verse

It was a hot, hot summer day. A group of us “white hats” had been through the paper mill where I used to work in a rented Schwan’s truck loaded down with ice cream sandwiches, handing them out to our thousand or so employees to encourage them to stay cool and safe. We had finished … Continue reading

There are lots of festivities planned for Saturday and hopefully the late Friday night rains have come and gone by Parade Time Saturday — 9 a.m.! Either way, there will be a Watermelon Festival…or a Water … Continue reading

Hot weather trivia

OK, this one isn’t about fishing. But on a hot, summer day when the fishing is slow, it’ll have to do. Besides, you need to know this. The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Maxwell, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner on July 17, 1946. The temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees.

The … Continue reading

Fishing is great! Catching? well…

How’s the fishing?  It’s great. You can be guaranteed to fish ’til you get your limit! How’s the catching?  Well now, that’s a different story. You can still catch plenty for a fish fry or enough to have a good time on the lake, but the heat of summer — and high winds the past … Continue reading
