At the end of each year, some people start slowing down and settling in, licking the wounds that the previous year may have given them. That’s some people. That’s not Gage Struben from Luna, La or his fishing partner Colby Dark.
Struben tore up the high school ranks when he was in school at West Ouachita last year and now that he’s graduated, he’s still working the waters of North Louisiana, searching for something better that he’s ever had.
And on December 27, 2023 he nabbed just that.
The day started off pretty slow for Struben and Dark, but around 8 A.M. things began to change. “We caught our first one up shallow but it was only a 2 pounder so we made a move out into some deeper water and decided to drag a jig around on some [fish] we marked on side image,” Struben explained.

The first fish to bite after that the 2 pound fish was Struben’s huge 11.80 and it was on from that point forward.
“We fished for another couple hours to fill out our limit that came out to be 36 lbs and some change. Needless to say I’ve only caught one other bag bigger than that,” he said.
Now I know what you’re asking…..”Where’d they catch ‘em?” My answer to that is this; They could have been at Bussey, or Darbonne, or Caney, or Claiborne. There’s gonna be plenty of articles and Facebook posts for the next few months that’ll blast the names of each fishery and dang near the GPS coordinates of where the fish were caught.
I don’t want to do that here just yet. Any of the above mentioned lakes could produce a bag like that given the right opportunity and if I name exactly where the fish came from, you can hang your hat that every boat launch will be full of trucks trying to duplicate what Gage and Colby caught. I could also lie, but I’m not that guy.
Just go where you know to go, fish how you know to fish, because the fish are biting. You just have to take the time to go get ‘em.
