You may see something a little fishy on crappie caught on Lake Darbonne these days. Crappie Forever along with State Representative Chris Turner have started a crappie tagging program on the lake and they need our help.
“We are tagging primarily 9 to 12 inch fish. Our goal is to monitor growth rates and movement of fish throughout the year. All fish will be tagged behind the dorsal fin.

On the tag is the tag number and a number to call if you catch a tagged fish. We ask that if someone catches a tagged fish to weigh it and measure the fish and record the location they caught the fish. Give the number on the tag a call and give us this information.

We encourage to release these tagged fish so we can monitor its progress. It’s not mandatory but if it’s released it gives us a better chance of getting more information on how our crappie are doing in the lake,” said Ronnie Turner.
According to the Lake Darbonne Crappie Tagging Program Facebook page A tagged fish was caught yesterday (11/6/23). Tag number 0598. This fish was tagged on 10/21/23 around the State Park. It was caught on 11/6/23 about 400 yards north of Jakes landing in the channel. That fish traveled right at 4 miles in 17 days. This fish was not released. The fisherman didn’t see the tag until he got home. Be sure to look for those tagged fish while you’re out fishing.
Turner will actually be the voice on the other end of the line when you call in your tag.
