This past Thursday night was full of excitement and talk. Daniel Colvin posted a kill of a great deer and many wondered if the score would be as big as the deer looked in the pictures. After the math was done, the tale of the tape proved that pictures don’t lie and the Colvin buck is the current Union Parish leader at 154 4/8”.
The young people also showed out, with several kids bringing in some nice deer from across the parish.
But the main thing that has caught my attention, isn’t the size of the racks but the body weight these bucks have carried. The heads were noticeably large which prompted me to ask, how much did he weight? Just Thursday night alone, 4 of the 9 deer brought in weighed over 200 pounds.
Now to some, that might not sound like much but in Union Parish, that’s saying a lot. With the dry wether conditions in the late summer, the browse was dead or dying and for deer to have weight like this early is truly eye opening. Maybe the acorn crop dropped earlier than expected due to the drought and the weight comes from that, who knows but one thing is for sure, the really nice deer continue to fall in north Louisiana.
Here’s how the rest of the field currently stands:
