The 3rd Annual Lake Darbonne Louisiana Legislative Crappie Tournament

On August 31, 2023, for the third straight year, Lake Darbonne held a crappie tournament for the elected officials in our state, so that they could come up and enjoy what our lake and our area has to offer. This year’s event was another great example of what Union Parish can bring in the world of tourism. Great hospitality, great food, and great fishing was enjoyed by everyone involved.

Now….to the part that everyone wants to know…..what kind of weight did September crappie in Lake Darbonne have for this tournament? I was certainly impressed to see what these folks could bring to the scales. The winning 3 fish had a combined weight of 5 pounds 10 ounces, caught by pro crappie fisherman Andy Yerger from Shreveport and Vinny St Blanc. The largest crappie however was landed by “local legend” Dusty McGehee and Chris Turner with 2 pounds 9 ounces. Not bad for fall sacalait!

Also, Crappie Forever started a tagging system for crappie on Lake Darbonne at this event. They tagged 5 crappie with a small tag behind the dorsal fin that has a number on it for anyone who may catch these fish to call. All you have to do if you catch a tagged fish is weigh it, measure it, and call the number on the tag to give the information on the fish. After that, the fish’s stats will be logged into an on-line platform so anyone who’s interest can track. For more information on the tagging system, visit crappieforever.com.

Here’s a quick video of the event from the water.
