It’s funny how the strands of fate can weave people together. This spring I went to a bow shoot it Broken Bow Oklahoma alone. I do this for two reasons; it’s cheaper and it forces me to interact with other people. The first day I shot with a guy from the Dallas area and his friends that I’d met earlier in the year at a Men’s retreat but the second day, it was just me.
I shot the first course that next morning in silence. Just me and the morning dew on the side of those hills in the Beaver Bend State Park. I have to admit it was nice to just walk with the only noise being my shoes pushing through the tall grass. The course I was on wasn’t a very hard one and very few archers were testing their abilities on the targets that dotted the ridges. After that course was done, I went to grab some lunch and get ready for the next course of the day.
The second course was a doosie. We had to take a pontoon ride over to one of the islands on Broken Bow Lake and then walk the rocky terrain around the lake’s shoreline. There was literally going to br nothing on this island but targets and rocks and a passel of shooters. The pontoon pulled up and we all began getting ready to load. As we walked single file up the ramp like animals going on Noah’s Ark, I heard someone say, “Hey, it’s the YouTube guy” towards a group of men waiting to board just ahead of me but I couldn’t narrow down who the comment was aimed at. There was easily 30 people ahead of me.
The ride across the lake was uneventful and we would soon reach our destination. Here’s where the trouble began for all of us……too many shooters and not enough area to stretch out. So, we sat there looking at each other as the shooters ahead of us took their turns one by one. In true Greg Hicks fashion, I put my plan into action. I was about to meet some folks.
I found a few guys sitting nearby on a downed tree and we chatted nonchalantly about the courses and the event. Nothing major. It was just regular conversation until the inevitable question would be asked, “Where ya from?”. I laughed and said, “Oh just a little town in North Louisiana. No where you’ve ever heard of.”
“Try me,” he laughed.
“Farmerville, but I live in Sterlington…..but not the rich folks Sterlington….I live across the river where the poor folks live” I laughed.
“I know exactly where Sterlington is!” he said. I swear I thought he was lying until he told me that he played golf at ULM and knew all about Monroe and the surrounding areas. I spent the next 5 hours shooting with some of the best guy’s I’ve ever known. The GK and “bow bro’s” are a perfect example of why I went to this event alone and eventually lead to this podcast.
GK is a hammer of a bow tech at Korbin’s Archery in Lubbock Texas and speaks incredibly well. His passion for archery shows as he talks in detail about the subject and the YouTube and Instagram content the guys at the shop put out is second to none. I sat recently and talked with GK about a few things gear wise and just a few basic archery questions that I’m sure others may want to know. Also, in the description of the video is a link to every item that GK mentions. Hope you guys enjoy!
