Today we’re taking a break from the bad fishing to celebrate another great sport in this area — turkey hunting. A group of knowledgeable and experienced turkey hunters will be putting on a first-ever turkey hunting and calling seminar for local and area residents this coming Saturday at the East Ouachita Recreation Center in Sterlington. Union Parish will be well represented with callers and presenters. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and is a great place to introduce new hunters to the sport or for the most veteran of hunters to learn a little bit more.
On the agenda are Huey Rhodes, former USFWS game warden and owner of Ouachita River Game Calls. Also presenting will be Jerry Antley, who has been making Cedar Hill Game calls for more than 30 years. Other local turkey hunters such as Peyton McKinnie and Nathan Pilgreen will also present turkey hunting strategies.
The weather is going to be beautiful Saturday for the first time in a long time, so I know a lot of you will be hitting the water in search of crappie and bass. But if you have any interest in turkey hunting, you won’t want to miss the chance to set the hook on this seminar. It will be a keeper.
Speaking of fishing this weekend, expect long lines and loads of fishermen on Lake D’Arbonne and all our other area lakes. PLEASE put safety first and pack an extra dose of patience as fishing season gets underway in earnest this weekend. Wear a life jacket — water temps are between 40 and 50 degrees – potentially fatal with exposure for just a few minutes, even if it is 70 degrees outside!
We also have a lot of visitors coming into the area in preparation for the upcoming Crappie Masters tournament. Show them the kind of hospitality that you’d like to receive if you were visiting another lake.
Good fishing!
