If you still need a waterfowl hunting “fix”, you can always go after geese this month. Louisiana has a special “Conservation Order” season for “light” geese in which many of the regulations are lifted. I’m not going to try to explain them to you but if you want to hunt them, read up on the rules and give them a shot.
Some big fields around our area have an amazing sight this time of year. Thousands upon thousands of geese descend on the area and glean remaining seeds, rice, soybeans, corn — whatever they can find — from harvested fields. Some of the best areas to see this sight are around Mer Rouge and in the Little Missouri Area. There aren’t words to describe the sight. The pre-season statewide waterfowl survey in November estimated 388,000 geese in our area and that number doubled in the latest survey. Amazing. Some have already headed back north, but it’s more amazing to see these huge flocks. And if you are close by when they all decide to take off, hold your ears. It sounds like a 747 airplane taking off.
