Boating safety first; Fireworks second

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAThere’s not a whole lot you can say about fireworks. Except maybe a good fireworks show is worth several thousand words…. Such are the stars of the show of the upcoming annual Fireworks Display over Lake D’Arbonne, set for this Saturday night, July 5.  They are beautiful to watch. Fireworks over the lake are just something special. The kids will love it, young and old. Here are the details: around 9 p.m. Saturday, July 5 at the Hwy. 33 bridge in Farmerville. Get there early and get a good spot.

But more important than the fireworks is Safety. Put safety first, especially if you are traveling and viewing by boat!

To date, Louisiana has had eight boating fatalities and we are only halfway through the year. Last year we set a record low of 15 boating fatalities.  There have also been 67 boating incidents investigated by LDWF so far this year. And as I write this, news comes that a speeding bass boat collided with a party barge on Lake Conroe in Texas, CONROE, Texas, killing a 29 and a 30-year old woman and a 9-year old boy and seriously injuring several others. And LDWF agents are investigating a boating accident on the Amite River in south Louisiana where the boat driver hit a tree and there was a fatality. Please be aware this can happen in an instance and be extra careful out there — especially near or after dark.

And here’s one more thing for the weekend: If you aren’t flying an American Flag, do it now. Show your support for our country. God Bless America.
