Congratulations to a couple of local fishermen who recently made a big SPLASH on Toledo Bend! Ray Albritton of West Monroe landed a fish of a lifetime to win the Sealy Outdoors Big Bass Splash on Toledo Bend. More than 3,000 fishermen took part in the tourney that offered a total of $500,000 in cash and prizes.
Albritton’s catch: an 11.03 pound largemouth. His prize: a 2014 Dodge Ram Quad Cab with a 5.7 Hemi, a 2014 Triton 20SX with a Mercury 200 Pro XS motor with Minnkota Fortrex trolling motor, Lowrance electronics, a shallow water Powerpole and Hydrowave and a $7,000 check.
Wow!
And it’s good to have friends. Albritton said after the tournament that he had only fished Toledo Bend twice before, but was with his good friend, Mark Corbin. The two were fishing an area known as Housen Bay and had caught several fish when around noon, he switched to a Zoom watermelon-seed baby Brush Hog lure. Fishing around huge grass beds in high winds, Albritton thought he was hung up when he first felt the fish.
But he wasn’t. After a brief battle with the fish, and trying to get the net unhung from fishing rods, he landed the fish and let out a whoop heard in two states. On the official scales, Albritton’s lunker weighed 11.03 pounds and measured 27 ¾ inches long with a 19 ½-inch girth.
Another local fisherman, Rick Carter of Farmerville, was next in line for the top prize with a 9.64 lunker. He fared pretty well, too. His catch landed him a 2014 Triton 19XS, Mercury Motor and $2,000 cash.
