Losing track of time

emilMy good friend the Right Reverend Retired Emil Turner, former Executive Director of the Sooiiieeeee Pig Conference of the Southern Baptist Association in the state to the north, is a regular Facebook Historian. He’s pretty good at it, despite his recent conversion to a form of fishing which involves a long, limp bamboo fishing rod and wading through babbling brooks.

Birthdays of famous, or infamous people, are his specialty.  He pointed out that no one was born yesterday in 1582 and in fact, no one was born for the next nine days during that year. It seems that Pope Gregory instituted the Gregorian Calendar (on which your computer bases it calculation of today’s date). To make the days work right for the year, Oct. 5-14 were omitted. Talk about losing track of time…

No matter what day our calendar says it is, our Biblical instructions about time are pretty clear:

“Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time you have been given.”

  — Colossians 4:5
