Duck Day (part 2)

phil-robertsonWednesday used to be “hump” day. Now it’s “duck” day. Since a record 8.6 million people watched the season premier of Duck Dynasty a couple of weeks back, that must be true in a lot more places than north Louisiana. Yesterday, I published four  out-takes from some past interviews with Phil Robertson, the Commander of Ducks. Here are four more today:

How to Save Money: “Four things I never got around to buying: a suit, a ring, a watch and a lawnmower, Folks would sometimes ask me when I was going to mow the grass. I’d tell them the frost’ll get it. But Phil, they say, it’s only early summer. It’s going to take a while, but the frost’ll get it.”

On missing ducks: “I guess you notice that watching our videos, we never miss ducks. There’s a good reason we never miss the ducks on the videos. Because when we miss the ducks, it does not go on the video. Here’s a rule of thumb for when you are missing ducks. Back years ago, we used to hunt out of blinds in tall cypress trees. We’d actually shoot down at the ducks. When we missed, we were able to see the pattern of shot hit the water. You know, 99% of the time, we shot behind them. Come on out there a little more in front of them. You’ll get them.”

On being a duck: “A duck, if you think about it, seriously, what’s it good for? If you rule out hunting them and eating them, what else is there? He’s a food source. People that don’t like hunting don’t know, but 85% of them are killed by natural predators. They are getting hunted and eaten whether we do it or not. Man is a predator, but one of the smallest ones.”

Types of callers: “There are two kinds of duck callers: world champion duck callers and world champion duck killers. The first time I hear an old hen mallard give a 40-note highball, I’ll start doing it. They don’t. Now when If an old hen duck comes flyin’ by and thinks you are one, then you’re in business.”
