Louisiana has one favorite son in the world championship BASS Masters Classic on Grand Lake in Oklahoma. It’s Greg Hackney, who lives in south Louisiana now, but previously lived in Oak Ridge. I’d love to see him win the Classic, but the odds are against him. Even BASS Senior Editor Ken Duke, who recently laid odds on each contender, figures Greg to finish middle of the pack. One of his reasons — Hackney (the “Hack Attack”) finished 35th and 32nd in two previous Elite Events on Grand Lake.
Hackney’s odds of winning: 40 – 1 (according to Duke) But Hey, I do like his LSU fishing gloves! And I wouldn’t count him out, despite the BASS odds. Let me point out that there are no official odds on the Bass Classic. Las Vegas usually puts odds on just about everything, but apparently they think that people, horses, racing dogs and hockey pucks are more predictable than February bass. So we’ll have to go with Duke’s take on it. Actually, 40-1 isn’t bad. There are 53 contestants and Duke has some of them as 150-1 to win it. Who does he like best?
You might know, it’s Kevin Van Dam, who at 5:1 is the favorite. Edwin Evers is ranked second at 7:1 and local favorite Oklahoma boy Jason Christie is at 10:1. He’s a rookie, though, and I would bet my best topwater plug that he won’t pull it off.
