The New Year was ushered in with some pretty dreary weather around here. But starting off the New Year took a bright, interesting twist for me. As I looked out through a drizzling rain across Lake D’Arbonne from the back porch, I saw the most awesome sight.
Right behind my boat dock, not 25 yards from shore, a bald eagle circled and played dive and seek with a group of fast-paddling puddle ducks. The Eagle had quite a tough time at first, but eventually caught his supper and flew off down the lake. It reminded me of how I needed to start off the new year:
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. — Isiah 40:31

Thanks, Polly. I think the best tip is just keep looking for them. That and a little luck seems to be your best ally. They seem to fly low around the lake in the early mornings and late evenings. Often you can see them perched in big trees around the lake or even recently on stumps out in the lake during the drawdown. The best tip I have for telling them from other big birds is when they fly, they seem to soar almost effortlessly. I’d love to hear any tips here in the comment section from veteran Eagle watchers in the area.
