I figure just about any day is a good day to go fishing. But not today. Not around here.
There is no doubt that one of the best times to catch fish is BEFORE an approaching storm or front. Not many will argue that. However, there is some doubt, but I have always found that fishing AFTER a thunder-and-lightning laden storm is NOT a good time to go fishing. If it is accompanied by a drastic change in temperature, you can even add more credibility to that theory. That would be today.
Others may disagree, and if you do, I’d love to hear from you and your experience. But until that time, I’m depending on my own experience and the insightful knowledge of extensive scientific research such as the Frank C. Brown “Collection of North Carolina Forklore”, Volume VII (okay, I know this is Louisiana, but nobody’s written such a book here).
Item No. 7779 in Brown’s book clearly states “Fish will not bite when it has been lightning.”
Item No. 7780 clearly states, “Thunder will cause fish to stop biting.”
Of course, the same book has some pretty weird “facts”, too — like “If your cow is bewitched, shut the door, do not let her have anything to eat and then the next day, milk her in silence without looking up.”
I am happy that I could pass on this wealth of knowledge to you. But I’m starting to think….if the fish don’t bite today and I fish the next day in silence without looking up, do you think I could catch….oh, never mind.
