I take fishing very seriously, but really, unless you are a professional fisherman, it’s just recreation. It’s a game. To get good at fishing, you have to put in a lot of work. I’ve been pretty serious about fishing in my life and I put in a lot of work to get good at it. Whether I achieved that is definitely debatable. I’m still a bit passionate about it. I can remember a lot of days heading to the lake telling my wife, “I’m going to get some food for us to eat”. In those days, I was kind of serious, but it would have been much more economical to go buy fish than to spend the money it took to catch them. Don’t even think about trying to figure out how much duck meat costs a pound when you hunt for your own!
The point today is that it is important to maintain a proper life/recreation balance. Most folks I know do that well. But it is easy to maybe overdo the recreation a little bit at a cost to some of the real important things in life. We live in such a busy world that it is easy to get caught in a trap of trying to find “food” for our lives by staying busy. Sometimes, too busy. When we do that, that “food” doesn’t really fill us up. In fact, it can leave us empty. Having fun at recreation and working hard at the important things makes for a full life.
Here’s some good advice for us all. In the Bible, John lays it out for us in pretty simple terms:
“Work for the food that stays good always and gives eternal life”
— John 6:37

Duck Dynasty quote of the day (4 days and counting until Season Two):
“Where I come from, you don’t mess with another man’s woman or his hat.” — Jase

Debateable? I’m sure you’re not there yet. Anybody that still fishes with a jellywaggler!
